Samantha Jones received her PhD in biomedical science in the spring of 2018 from the University of California, San Diego. Her research focused on the role of RNA in neurological development and disease. Although passionate about her thesis work, she found she was happiest when communicating science to the public, so she began pursuing science writing and outreach opportunities part way through her PhD. While in San Diego, Sam was an organizer for ComSciCon-San Diego 2017 and 2018 as well as the 2018 Share Your Science workshop, where she helped scientists develop the skills to present their research in a more publicly accessible way. In the summer of 2018 Sam moved to Washington, D.C. for an assistant editor position at science news source Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN). Outside of her work with C&EN, she continues to freelance and is always looking to explore opportunities for researchers and the public to talk about science. Sam spends her free time reading fun works of fiction, teaching and practicing yoga, checking out all her new city has to offer, and promoting women in STEM and STEM communication.
