Ryan Alexander Coots is a graduate student in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University where he researches eukaryotic mRNA translation initiation mechanisms during amino acid starvation with Dr. Shu-Bing Qian. In addition to his research, Alex serves on the BEST Program's Advisory Board, where he assists in the planning and execution of career panels for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Alex has written for the Cornell Sun, Ithaca Times, published letters in the Wall Street Journal, and currently writes for the American Society for Nutrition as a guest blogger. In mid-2015, Alex took a six month leave of absence from his graduate studies to pursue a science policy internship in the Washington DC area. While in the DC area, Alex met with members of Congress to advocate for improved NIH funding.
