Graduate Student, Biochemistry, Dartmouth
Pinar Gurel

I have a background in chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill, and am currently a fifth year graduate student in the biochemistry department in the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. My research focuses on the cytoskeleton, and I am particularly interested in the biochemical mechanisms of how different factors influence actin cytoskeletal behavior, specifically, actin disassembly. Apart from research, I am a member of the newly formed ASCB COMPASS (committee for students and postdocs) where I have focused on using social media and other techniques to keep scientists connected to each other and to the community. Additional outreach activities include representation in the Dartmouth graduate student council and our newly formed Policy club (STEPs), mentoring high school, undergrad, and graduate students, and advocacy for government funded scientific research.
