Hediyeh Zamani is a fourth-year PhD student in Chemistry at Syracuse University. She synthesizes quantum dot nanoparticles which absorb light in a wide range of UV-Vis region and in return, emit light with a particular color. Hediyeh uses different chemical compositions to control the color of the emitted light. These quantum dots can be used in solar cells, LEDs, lasers and even Q-LED TV (Quantum-dot Light Emitting Diode) screens as they can absorb and emit various visible lights. Hediyeh is also passionate about science policy, and advocacy for women and minorities. Last two falls, she’s been a lead facilitator in a five-week course for freshmen which included conversations around identity and inclusion at Syracuse University. In her free time, she solves jigsaw puzzles or plays board games and watches (Marvel) movies with her friends.
