Björn is currently a PhD candidate at the Human Systems Laboratory, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, MIT. He works on tackling climate change with machine learning, together with Prof. Dava Newman, Cait Crawford, and Chris Hill. As deep learning algorithms are widely considered 'black-box', his work focuses on increasing trust and transparency when using deep learning in predicting and visualizing climate change. His research interests include physics-informed neural networks, uncertainty quantification, Earth system modeling, and forest carbon quantification. Previously, he has obtained his M.Sc. at MIT in Autonomous Systems, pioneering with Prof. Jon How safe and robust deep reinforcement learning techniques.
