The Communicating Science at ScienceWriters2019 (ComSciCon-SciWri19) Workshop took place at Penn State University from October 24-29, 2019. ComSciCon-SciWri19 was the second workshop organized in coordination with the ScienceWriters2019 Annual Meeting, a joint meeting of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW) that provides science writers with a mix of professional development workshops, briefings on the latest scientific research, extensive networking opportunities, and local science field trips.
ComSciCon-SciWri19 student attendees received travel and lodging support to attend the ScienceWriters2019 Annual Meeting. In addition to the ScienceWriters2019 program, attendees received hands-on training and actively participated in discussions with fellow attendees and expert mentors. Each ComSciCon-SciWri19 student attendee produce and published an original piece (e.g. coverage of a scientific research briefing, interview with a conference speaker, outreach blog post, etc.) following their completion of the workshop.
ComSciCon-SciWri19 was sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Applications were open to all graduate students (MS, PhD, MPH, etc.), medical and veterinary students, postdoctoral researchers, and other scientists with previous science communication and/or writing experience studying or working in the U.S. U.S. citizenship was not required for eligibility.
