The Communicating Science at ScienceWriters2019 (ComSciCon-SciWri19) Workshop will take place at Penn State University from October 24-29, 2019. ComSciCon-SciWri19 is the second workshop organized in coordination with the ScienceWriters2019 Annual Meeting, a joint meeting of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW) that provides science writers with a mix of professional development workshops, briefings on the latest scientific research, extensive networking opportunities, and local science field trips.
ComSciCon-SciWri19 student attendees will receive travel and lodging support to attend the ScienceWriters2019 Annual Meeting. In addition to the ScienceWriters2019 program, attendees will receive hands-on training and actively participate in discussions with fellow attendees and expert mentors. Each ComSciCon-SciWri19 student attendee will produce and publish an original piece (e.g. coverage of a scientific research briefing, interview with a conference speaker, outreach blog post, etc.) by the end of the workshop.
ComSciCon-SciWri19 is sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Applications will be open to all graduate students (MS, PhD, MPH, etc.), medical and veterinary students, postdoctoral researchers, and other scientists with previous science communication and/or writing experience studying or working in the U.S. U.S. citizenship is not required for eligibility.
