The third annual ComSciCon-Houston Workshop will take place over a span of two days, one week apart: March 16, 2019 & March 23, 2019 at Rice University. Participants in this workshop will interact closely with experts in communicating science through written and digital media, as well as gain insight on how to utilize these skills throughout their careers.

The conference will feature a keynote speaker, pop talks, a scientific GIF design workshop, a live interview demonstration between a journalist and scientist, and panels on the following topics:                                                                                                                         

  • Basics of science communication

  • Science writing

  • Science communication to policymakers

  • Science communication for diverse audiences: beyond science writing

As part of our Write-A-Thon, participants will write an article (600-800 words) on a topic of their choosing and receive both expert and peer feedback on their writing. The Write-A-Thon prompt will be provided on Day 1 of the conference (March 16th), the first draft is due March 18th, peer feedback will be due March 20th, and the revised draft will be due March 22nd. Expert review of writing pieces will occur on Day 2 of the conference (March 23rd).
