Graduate Student, Molecular Biology, Northwestern University
Annie Bruns

Annie grew up in a tiny farming town in Northeast Iowa, and received her B.A. in biology from Luther College in Decorah, IA. She will graduate in July with her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Northwestern University where she studies cellular proteins that detect RNA virus infection and initiate immune responses. Her undergraduate studies in science and religion opened her eyes to the powerful feelings of wonder, awe, and reverence toward science and Nature, and she has ever since been on a mission to share these feelings with others and increase the public’s appreciation of science. Throughout graduate school Annie has enjoyed many science communication activities including various science outreach programs for underrepresented populations, and designing and teaching a new course for freshman at Northwestern called Storytelling and Science, where students learn the elements of powerful storytelling and apply them to contemporary scientific discourse. She is also the founder of Fireside Science, a storytelling event designed to create a skepticism-free space dedicated to awe, wonder, and building community.
